The Countdown to ABQZFV!

ABQZFV is nearly here! Thanks for coming out to our pre-zine fest events! It's been great to see you all, and totally fun to get excited about our big day on October 10th. But first-- we have a few more events before we gather our forces and MAKE IT HAPPEN.

1.) On THURSDAY, September 24th at 8pm don't miss GET LOST: a Benefit for ABQZF at Sister, downtown. Three dollars gets you in. We'll raffle off prizes, we'll have ABQZF merch and THREE punks bands on board. Constant Harmony, punk tricksters Rudest Priest, and new darlings, Time Wound. DJ Mello will spin tunes in between! This is your BIG CHANCE to support ABQZF before the fest! 

2.) The FINAL event before the fest!! On OCTOBER 8th at 7pm Join ABQZFV organizers Marya and Liza for a night of last-minute zine-making, cruise the zine library, and help prepare for the big day! We'll be making zines, hanging decorations and more. And then two days later, ABQ Zine Fest!! Yah! We'll have tables and chairs set up so you can work on your final layouts, and a few typewriters to add a little verve to your paste-ups. This event is free-- but if you want to put some dollars bills in the jar, we won't say no! 

3.) Look for Zinester Interviews coming your way, start on OCTOBER 1st! Every day until zine fest we'll post an interview on the exhibitors coming to ABQZFV. The first interview: Sara Century!

Zinester Interview: Justin Guthrie is No Poser

ABQ Zine Fest is TWO WEEKS AWAY! From now until the fest, we’ll be highlighting some of the zinesters exhibiting at The Tannex, The Tan, and Small Engine Gallery on Saturday, October 5th. NEXT: Justin Guthrie

How long have you been writing zines, and how did you get started?

I’ve been doing zines for 2 years now and I started cause me and my friends all got super hyped on photography and decided to make zines together and hand them out to people. My first one was called Cuban Linx, a Raekwon The Chef rip off haha.

Please tell us about the zines you’ll be tabling at ABQZF!

I’ll be tabling some zines I made and that I’ve had published. I made one zine about early 2000s skate fashion called “No Posers” that I’m really stoked on, other zines are more 35mm photography of sublime findings in the great state of New Mexico. I might throw in a doodle zine too.

What do you say when someone asks you,  “What are zines?”

In my context I usually tell them it’s a photo series printed out and assembled into a mini magazine or a magazine version of a photobook. It’s a way to showcase your art in a physical way rather than an online way or a capitalized way by having your art in a real sponsored magazine.

What do you enjoy most about making zines?

That my photos are out in the open world and physical and that hopefully people will pay attention and read deeper into them rather than on online when people just scroll to the next photo instantly. That’s what I do with zines, I pay attention to every detail and respect what it has to offer so I hope people can do that for me, that’s what would make me enjoy the zine.

What’s the most challenging thing about zine making?

Money.

Roughly how many zines do you archive in your personal collection?

I have probably like 45 zines of zines I have made and by trading zines with people across the world for my zines and then buying zines I really want to own. If I had a lot more money I would definitely have a lot more zines, I love em’.

Do you have a zine crush? If so, are you willing to reveal the object of your zine affection?

Peter Sutherland, because he makes the best zines I’ve ever seen. If you ever get a chance to go to Family bookstore on Fairfax in LA make sure to check out Peter Sutherland’s zines.

So much of the written word we now experience via digital media. Why are zines important?

To keep pushing physical art in the real world, rather than everything just going digital. It’s going to a point, personally, that I feel lack of depth for art or photo series that goes straight to the internet. Zines keep the underground alive in a way.

Hello Friends!

ABQ ZINE FEST is over for 2012. It was a WONDERFUL DAY. Thank you all for having a hand in making it so! We're pulling together a blog entry to recap the day and the evening. In the Meantime, here's a pic of zine fest in full swing. Don't think the party's over, ya'll.

Making Mini Zines at Maker Faire!

Hello ABQ Zine Fest friends!

We're coming up on the final weeks before the fest! We're VERY EXCITED to get to the actual day of PLAY: October 6th from 10am-6pm. We just have a few more pre-zine events coming up before the fest!

Come make mini zines with us at Albuquerque Mini Maker Faire, Sunday, September 23rd, 10am-6pm at Civic Plaza in Downtown Albuquerque. We'll be sharing how to make mini zines out of a single sheet of paper! It's pretty fun, super easy and great into to zines, for the whole family.

Happy Friday, folks! The end of the working week is here, and we're off to Captain America's Garage & Wax Night, to hand out zines, and hang out. We can't help it. We're excited about ABQ Zine Fest coming up in a few short weeks at the Kosmos, on October 6th!

Maybe we're a little less than three weeks away from zine fest, but we've already started celebrating with a series of hang outs we're calling, "Pre Zine Events." In case you missed it, on Monday evening at the Tan Gallery in Barelas, we had a Dirty Zine Reading. (And if you missed the interview about the reading by local wonder, Things in Light, here it is!  Let's just say, it was SUPER FUN. And pretty darned hot in there. Not just from the readings themselves-- but we had to keep the door closed to keep the Po-po from taking out of context our context. Look-- people have BIG HANG UPS about sex and sex-positive situations and events-- we get that. But what better place than a zine reading to find awkward, nerdy support for experiencing a little kink? Readers included Billy the Bunny, Major Rainy Sneer, Anita Margarita, Alex Ross-Raymond, and Sirena Reyes. DJ Mello spun records, and the slap fest between Marya and Andy as they tried to read from the 50 Shades Generator  was genius, and ridiculous. Again, we had FUN in a secure environment. No one was harmed in the making of Dirty Zine Reading night.

We're so afraid of talking about sex-- afraid of other people find out about our preferences, are interests, or kink. However, we live in a culture that says violence is okay. We live in a culture that says illicit, silent and on the DL is better than the expression of ideas, emotional needs, and perspectives. We live in a society that struggles with whether or not women should control how they experience their bodies in the public AND in private. We live amongst sustained ignorance that suggests RAPE has degrees of heinousness. 

It takes courage to disclose. 

Don't fear dirty talk in at an art gallery. Fear the possibility of living in a country that doesn't allow such freedoms. There. Leaping off the soap box now!

On Tuesday, after hanging out at Winning for Game Night, Marya raced over to KUNM to play her set of music on Music to Soothe the Savage Beast, with DJ Tahnee. If you've never DJ'ed on the air before, know that's nerve wracking. Totally. But, it was a good show, and the playlist will be available on the KUNM website, pretty soon. And, on October 2nd, Marya will be back on the air with Tahnee, spinning more zine-inspired tunes. Please listen in!
